Colleges should match courses to jobs

An editorial calls for incentives and scholarships to reward students in critical fields such as engineering and health care in Michigan. "The state should create incentives for students who choose to specialize in such fields - and commit to working in Michigan for at least five years." The editorial criticizes Michigan for continuing to support teacher education programs which are "subsidizing thousands of teachers it doesn't need - only to export them to other states." According to the editorial, 25 percent of Michigan's university teacher preparation graduates are finding jobs in Michigan - forcing hundreds of others to find work elsewhere. "Universities should work willingly with the state and create their own strategies to address this problem."
